Bees are great pollinators. Is there a weed killer that doesn't harm them and other insects?

They play a vital role in the pollination of fruits and veg. It was found that insecticides, especially neonicotinoid (neonics) poison bees and other pollinators. However, most countries in the EU are implementing regulations to reduce the use of these in 'open air' agriculture. However, exemptions are granted in particular for sugar beet fields. But that's another topic. We are concentrating on herbicides (weed killers) which are a big contributor to poisoning bees.

How do weed killers harm bees?

They disrupt the psychological and digestive systems, making them more vulnerable to disease. When bees visit your garden these chemicals are brought back to their hives. Then the poison is spread amongst the whole hive, where most will die. We need to try to find the best compromise.

What to use on weeds.

Weed killers which are safe for the environment are usually safe for bees.

So Neem oil, Epsom salt, vinegar and Castile soap are great options.

If you have to use weed killers.

•Only use them when you have to and spray carefully.

•Spray after 8pm, or when it's dusk. As most bees will not be out.

•Try to not use one with Glyphosate. As It is VERY toxic to bees and other wildlife. The WHO also lists it as probably carcinogenic to humans (cause cancer).

Why bees are important.

•They are incredibly pollinators.

•They are vital to our ecosystem. By supporting the growth of plants and trees, which not only feed us, but many other animals.

Bees are amazing creatures that contribute to interconnected and complex ecosystems that enable many species to coexist.
