Part 1 - My journey into rewilding.
I have been interested in finding out more about it, since I saw a sign in Wales, saying 'no to rewilding'. I couldn't imagine why anyone wouldn't want rewilding.
So I did some research and I found this YouTube video inspiring, HTTPS://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zlJP5UjGHo They're talking about rewilding in a bigger concept, of how to rewild the UK and the challenges.
The presenters gave me a wonderful picture in my mind, of how rewinding could look and how I could support the idea.
Due to my personal circumstances, giving me space to research and evaluate my contribution to nature. I decided to turn my garden into a wildlife paradise, to rewild my garden.
With an optimistic mindset I set about researching, how best to go about it. Considering my garden is made up of thick clay and backs onto a woodland. I knew I wouldn't be able to just sprinkle some seeds and let nature take over. I had to give it a nudge.
I started this in April 2021.
Steps I took and challenges I had.
I needed a good reviewed, reasonably priced amount of UK supplied wild flower seeds. First challenge. This was much harder than I thought for the following reasons.
Hardly anyone seems to offer large-ish quantities of wild flower seeds, unless from China.
Especially, wildflower seeds for woodland and shade. As the end of my garden is in shade and backs onto woodland.
A lot of reviews mentioned they were disappointed by the few amount of seeds that arrived on the post.
Some supply seeds with vermiculite 'padding'. So sometimes you're not sure how many seeds you're getting. However, vermiculite is good as it increases water and nutrient retention and aerates the soil.
The seed mix's I bought were:
Woodland shady mix at £11.99 for 1 x 15g of seed, plus vermiculite in a 200g box produced by Thompson and Morgan (T&M)
A pack of 4 seed boxes for £24.99, from Amazon and produced by T&M. They were 1x Annual and perennial mix. 1x Easy annual mix. 2x Perfect for pollinators. Same seed and vermiculite as the woodland mix.
So next I need to find some top soil while I wait for the seed to arrive. This. Is. To protect the seed.
